In contrast to metal pressing tools used by the car manufacturers, the tooling used to produce the rust repair panels is of a lower cost. It has to be because the required lower production volumes involved would simply not allow the use of hardened steel tools. Instead the specialized, short run press tools are used to dramatically reduce the piece price of a rust repair panel or metal pressing. This tooling is capable of producing a well defined pressing that is an exact reproduction of the original car body contour. The tooling is sufficiently robust to produce thousands of panels, and it can be economically repaired or altered. The tools are produced from a diverse range of materials according to the specific need. Patterns can be supplied or produced to use in making the press tool. Certainly the largest project yet undertaken by the Press Facility has been the manufacture of the majority of the metal body panels for the Axcess Australia Low Emission Vehicle. These panels were manufactured with the assistance of B.H.P., through the provision of low bake hardening steel sheet which is easily formed by short run press tools and hardens when the vehicle is baked after painting.

| An excellent example of a new tool in the press. The panels pressed from such tooling are as good as anything produced from hardened steel tools. While this tooling is used for prototyping and short runs in some cases it is capable of producing up to 30,000 pieces before it needs replacing. |

All the panels indicated by the retouched areas on the photo below are panel sections produced by RSP Australia. In addition all four door skins were produced by RSP Australia. Much was learned from the tooling processes employed and the specialist metallurgy used to form the panels which will be incorporated into the production processes for other pressed panels. The metal pressing system is invaluable in trial production, prior to producing
